But Tegmark contends the mathematical structure found in the natural world shows that math exists in reality, not just in the human mind. No other practical method exists, for there would be no point in placing measures of equal weight on both pans, since they could be removed without affecting the balance. Can a 1-ounce potato be weighed with 5- and 8-ounce measures in such a way that a the potato is with the 5's, and the 8's are in the other pan; b the potato is with the 8's, and the 5's are in the other pan? For instance, can we use ounce and ounce measures to weigh a 1-ounce potato?

Someday, Tegmark said, scientists will probably be able to describe even consciousness using math. The potatoes are gone, but we are left with three equations to deal with. This instrument is finely tuned to pick up miniscule motion in space-time and reveal whether it is in fact grainy at the smallest scale. If so, such a description of objects in this external reality and the relations between them would have to be completely abstract, forcing any words or symbols to be mere labels with no preconceived meanings whatsoever.

The multiples of 21, or of any integer, are defined similarly. Even better, the theory suggests that all the black holes in our universe may themselves be the gateways to alternate realities. There are various methods of weighing the potato. This model is based on black holes that spin, because that rotation is part of what prevents the original matter from fully collapsing.

But what if the universe itself is math? That's what cosmologist Max Tegmark believes. Instead, the only properties of these entities would be those embodied by the relations between them. What I didn't realise was that maths has a soul.

What is the closest that a multiple of 7 can be to a multiple of 12 without actually coinciding with it?

A solutions manual to accompany this text is Mathematics: the man-made universe book for free download. They'd been told beautiful myths and stories, but little did they realize that they had it in them to actually figure out the answers to these questions for themselves.

Think of mathematical symbols as mere labels without intrinsic meaning. But if we assume that reality exists independently of humans, then for a description to be complete, it must also be well-defined according to non-human entities — aliens or supercomputers, say — that lack any understanding of human concepts.

The question about potatoes now reduces to this: Let A and B be natural numbers. Is 0 a negative integer? Starting with a survey of questions on weight, the text discusses the primes, the fundamental theorem of arithmetic, rationals and irrationals, tiling, tiling and electricity, probability, infinite sets, and many other topics.

But in the new text, co-written with American physicist Leonard Mlodinow, he said new theories showed a creator is "not necessary". What amounts of postage can be made with cent and cent stamps?

Mathematics: The Man

Can a collection of 5-ounce measures Mathematics: the man-made universe book one pan ever balance a collection of 8-ounce measures on the other pan?

And then Kurt Godel came along and blew the whole house down: Essentially, Godel demonstrated, in a deeply involved process of reasoning, that the "axiomatic method has certain inherent limitations, which rule out the possibility that even the ordinary arithmetic integers can ever be fully axiomatised.

In all of these, X and Y are to be natural numbers, possibly including zero. Consider 5- and ounce measures. An active supermassive black hole at the core of the Centaurus A galaxy blasts jets of radiation into space.

What an excellent book. Even better, the theory suggests that all the black holes in our universe may themselves be the gateways to alternate realities.
